University of Washington is a core member of newly announced New York Climate Exchange

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and the Trust for Governors Island on April 24 announced that a consortium led by Stony Brook University will found and develop a world-leading climate solutions center on Governors Island in the city’s harbor. The New York Climate Exchange will be a first-of-its kind international center for developing and deploying dynamic solutions to our global climate crisis.

Virtual Book Launch and Panel Discussion ‘Disaster Preparedness and Management

The Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) organised a virtual book launch of Community Resilience Handbook for Disaster Preparedness and Management. This handbook is a compilation of learnings from the three disaster management workshops conducted in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode in association with the US Consulate General in Chennai and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA). Ms Ann Lee Sheshadri, Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General in Chennai, released the handbook which has been published in English as well as Malayalam. The book launch was followed by a panel discussion on All-Hazards Approach to Community-Based Disaster Risk Mitigation.

US-drafted disaster management course for TN?

TN has shown interest in exploring options for incorporating an introductory 40-hour online course in their professional and academic courses to spread awareness on disasters and disaster risk reduction management, according to Dr Himanshu Grover, co-director of the Institute for Hazard Mitigation and Planning, College of Built Environments, University of Washington.

Dr. Grover stated that with generalization comes efficiency. It is important to have a common framework to enable preparedness i.e. a common practice that can be followed irrespective of the type of disaster. The vulnerability of a place is both social and natural; we must invest in the community to make it stronger to respond to every disaster. Natural interventions must be disaster specific, but community preparedness enables a swift response irrespective of the type of disaster. With an all   7  hazards approach we can have a robust plan and response team. Cost Benefit Analysis of the American disaster management system has shown that investing in Mitigation and Preparedness saves money.

Grover Awarded Research Grant from the National Science Foundation!

CSDE Affiliate Himanshu Grover has been awarded a new grant from the National Science Foundation. The project is titled, “Assessing the Expectations Gap – Impact on Critical Infrastructure Service Providers’ and Consumers’ Preparedness, and Response.” While community lifeline service providers and local emergency managers must maintain coordinated response and recovery plans, their timelines may not match expectations of local consumers of lifeline services.
